A few farmers associated with the Monastery. No permanent inhabitants.
Description and notes:
More or less through an accident of history, the Monastery finds itself in the middle of what was once a decent sized city. This is perhaps not the best place to try to support oneself agriculturally, but the brothers and those they protect have made the best they could of the situation. They have knocked down smaller buildings, and turned larger ones into storehouses, with gardens on remodeled roofs. There has also been some experimentation of putting together greenhouses. There is an abundance of glass (all those windows), and several have been set up on roof tops and in well lit areas. A similar experiment with hydroponics indoors has not been as successful. A lack of usable water, along with no workable artificial light, has meant that most food still has to be grown out of doors.The Monastery is barely above subsistence levels. There is enough for all to go around and be more or less healthy, but food is not fancy or particularly plentiful. It is part of the Brothers' rule that everyone, from the Lord Abbot to children just old enough to pull weeds, spends some time working in the fields.
